Tantra: the yoga of love and transformation in Petaluma and San Francisco California
Individually designed and supervised ongoing studies, mentoring, private consultations, and workshops. Johanina works with each student personally according to their ability to integrate the teachings in their life.
We offer a transformative Tantra for modern practitioners that reflects our forty plus year love affair with these teachings.
The range of these teachings includes classical studies of Indian and Buddhist lineages; Tantric psychology; ancient and modern sacred sexual practices; breath, energy, chakra, and hatha yoga.
Many people confuse Tantra with the practice of sacred sex. Tantra is a philosophy and practice for the realization of the unconditioned Self. The sexual metaphor pervades the Tantras. Shakti and Shiva’s love gives birth to a richly erotic universe. But, rather than a guide to better orgasms and sexual intimacy (see Johanna’s book: The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the Kama Sutra for a guide to love, sex and intimacy), the sexual imagery of the Tantras points to the possibility of a spiritual awakening, of which sexual love gives us a powerful albeit often brief glimpse. For those who are seeking liberation, Tantra generously embraces life’s contradictions, reveals the truth of the senses as a vehicle for awakening and awareness; and offers a highly refined map of spiritual love and being.
Johanina began her study of Tantra in 1971 with Chogyam Trungpa and continued as a student of the Indian mystic Osho. She studied with Tantric scholars: Daniel Odier, Douglas Brooks, Christopher Tompkins, Chris Wallace; and Kirin Mishra, Parvathi Devi, Sw. Veda Baharti of Rishiskesh and is an initiate in the lineage of the Himalayan masters under Sw. Rama of Rishikesh.
In the 1980’s Johanina was involved in the neoTantra movement in the west and for three years facilitated breath work in the Tantra: The Art of Conscious Loving Seminars offered by Charles and Caroline Muir. In 1990 she co-founded The Center for Passionate Living where she continued to explore the possibilities for bringing Tantra to psychological work and couple’s relationship counseling. Johanina taught Tantra for The Human Awareness Institute between 1994-1998. She has presented Tantra to The International Imago Therapy Association, The Society for the Scientific Study of Sex, The World Congress on Psychology and Spirituality, appeared on radio and TV and in numerous publications.
“Johanina Wikoff is an extraordinary teacher. She has extensive knowledge of the history and ancient traditions of Yogic and Buddhist Tantra, as well as a firm grounding in various modern therapies and modalities. Easy to talk to, informative and very compassionate, Johanina is one of my favorite guides.”
